Early in June Matthew was off to the Pioneer Trek put on by our Stake. They donned pioneer clothes, packed their stuff into buckets and off they went for a 15 mile trek with pushing and pulling their handcarts! Matthew had a great time and made some good friends along the way. The pushing/pulling was a lot of work, but the weather was fairly mild and that made it much more pleasant for all. Matthew was assinged to a "family" of 7 kids, with 2 adults as the "parents". They each had to take a turn taking care of the infant baby (a sack of sand) which Matthew promptly put near the fire and then stuffed into the bottom of his sleeping bag to keep him warm! He'll be such a great father! He says the food was awesome, apparently they weren't limited to a handful of flour a day, and the evening dance was a blast! Along the way, the pony express arrived with letters for all the kids from their parents, and then on the last day they had a blast on a water slide, which was build as an eagle scout project, hence he came home wet, muddy, sweaty, burned, and smiling! This was really a very memorable experience for Matthew, one he will remember for a long time.
